Respiratory diseases in cats

2014-05-04

These diseases are common in long-haired cat breeds. Often these diseases are caused by viral inflammation of the respiratory tract. Animals of all ages are susceptible to the disease. The causative agents can be various viruses, from herpes to angina.

Latent period of the disease usually lasts 3-4 days. An obvious sign of the disease is the catโ€™s frequent sneezing and rubbing of the eyes with its paws. One day after the latent period of the disease, pus begins to emerge from the eyes and nostrils. The body temperature of the sick pet rises to 41 degrees. The cat becomes intensely thin, refuses to take food and water. If left untreated, the cat develops pneumonia, convulsions and seizures. The disease lasts for several weeks. Treatment of the cat should be carried out only under the supervision of a veterinarian, in order to prevent complications, antibiotics and various sulfa preparations can be used. The eyes and nose are washed with a solution of manganese solution. It is recommended that the cat be given warm food and drink. If several animals live in the house, the sick pet should be isolated from the others in order to prevent the spread of infection.
