White cats. What pristine beauty and stature. Their snow-white sheen, often combined with blue, green, gold or even “different” colored eyes, make them stand out among the colorful cats. White cats evoke many associations, snow, down, something soft and warm. That is why it is not uncommon to call white cats “Snowball” or “Fluff. White cats, blue eyes and deafness
Many (but not all) white cats with blue eyes are born deaf White cats with ‘different eyes’, that is, one eye blue and one green, brown or gold, are deaf in one ear, which is located on the side of the blue eye. Such anomalies occur when the white gene dominates.
5% of the total cat population are white cats (i.e., pure white). 15-40% of these white cats have one or both blue eyes.
Of those white cats with one or both blue eyes, 60-80% are deaf; 20-40% have normal hearing; 30-40% have one blue eye and are deaf, while 60-70% have one blue eye and normal hearing.
White cats and skin cancer
The sun is the enemy of white cats, as constant exposure to the sun’s rays can cause squamous cell skin cancer, especially in areas where hair is thin or absent, such as the ears, nose or eyelids.
