Ascarids in cats are a very common occurrence in stray cats. Toxocara cati and Toxacaris leonine are two species of ascarids. These parasites reach a length of 7-8 centimeters. Infection can occur when a cat eats parasite eggs together with soil, insects (e.g. cockroaches), rodents.
Symptoms of ascarid infestation
- Abdominal upset and bloating (stomach bulging);
- Diarrhea. Frequent calls to the toilet and liquid stools;
- Vomiting. When vomiting, the cat’s body may get rid of the ascarids;
- Decreased appetite. Ascarids take up a lot of space in the stomach;
- Dull coat. The condition of the coat deteriorates. The coat becomes dull;
- Intestinal problems. A blockage of the intestines may occur. This is very dangerous and it is necessary to see a veterinarian in time.
There are special medications for ascarids, they are safe and have no side effects. Your veterinarian can help you make the right choice. It is impossible to cure the cat without medication, the medication will help to remove the ascarids together with the feces. After treatment, the cat should be given prophylactic drugs against ascarids.
Be sure to keep an eye on your cat. You can reduce the risk of infection by making sure there are no vectors in the house (cockroaches, rodents). Remember, letting your cat outside increases the risk of infection.
